In lieu of sharing a meal, as we did at our town hall retreats in the past, this month’s Commetta collective team building initiative has us walking, distanced yet together, in solidarity with the Native Women’s Shelter as part of their virtual #SpiritWalk fundraising campaign.
“This year, the funds raised from the Virtual Spirit Walk will go towards the salary of the Family Care Worker position at the shelter. The Shelter’s Family Care program provides healing and support in the face of the devastating, colonial practice of removing children from Indigenous families.
Indigenous children are overrepresented at every stage of the youth protection system; the rates are higher than ever before, including during the period of residential schools. The Shelter plays an essential role in supporting Indigenous women and children that are impacted by systemic discrimination within the child welfare system. The Virtual Spirit Walk is an opportunity to directly contribute to and support the important work the Shelter is doing in order to keep Indigenous families together.”

The Commetta collective will be participating in the 2020 Virtual Spirit Walk in support of Indigenous women and children. We’ve chosen to support the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal (NWSM) because of the incredible work they do to empower Indigenous women and children in our city. They rely on financial help to develop their many critical services and programs providing a safe and healing environment where women can rebuild their lives.
We are also inspired by the ongoing advocacy work to fight systemic racism by Nakuset, the Executive Director of the NWSM, and her team.
